What Should I bring to camp?
We recommend that you bring the following to camp
each day:
- Practice soccer clothing (shorts, T-shirt, socks,
shin guards) and cleats (outdoor soccer shoes).
Campers also need to bring sandals, flip flops
or other indoor shoes for wear during the indoor
(swimming, classroom videos) activities. We also
recommend that campers bring mouth guards to protect
their teeth during competitive play.
- An extra set of dry clothes, especially if rain
is expected. The indoor classrooms at Howard Community
College are air-conditioned and players who are
wet from the rain and do not have dry clothes
will be uncomfortable.
Camp will remain outdoors (except during lunchtime)
in case of light rain. In the event of hard rain,
or more adverse weather conditions (lightning,
thunder, etc.), we will follow the safety procedures
and
proceed inside (The nearest building) immediately.
for the safety and emergency procedures.
- A water bottle. There will be freshly supplied
large containers with water and ice available
throughout the day. Players can fill their bottles
as needed. For hygiene reasons, we will not allow
any player to drink directly from the large water
containers.
- A hand stitched soccer ball. If you do not have
your own ball, we will have some extras available.
You may also purchase a camp ball anytime throughout
the week.
- Swim attire (towel, bathing suit, etc.) for
campers enrolled for full days (8:30 - 4:00 pm).
- Lunch, swimming attire and towel (for all full
day campers). The Howard Community College pool
is available during all of our standard (non-elite)
sessions. During this year's summer sessions,
we will be in the pool from approximately 11:15
until noon on Mondays and Fridays, and from 3:10
– 3:50 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
We will eat lunch in the HCC cafeteria around
noon each day, and we will watch videos after
lunch in our air-conditioned classrooms, L-150
and L-152.
- Optional: insect repellent (sometimes, during
the morning hours, the tiny gnats come out to
play also)
- Medications, if needed. We ask you to instruct
your child to administer these medications her/himself.
By state law, our trainers and coaches are no
longer permitted to administer medicine, even
with a consent form. If your child cannot administer
her/his own medicine, we ask you to please visit
our camp to do so.
- Optional: a small amount of money for the purchase
of a snack or drink, if your child is interested
in buying something from the vending machines
before watching the videos.

What kind of movies are played during
lunch-time or after-care activities?
During lunch time all campers have a chance to watch an instructional
soccer video or professional soccer game during the first 25 minutes of
video/lunch time. After that, players will have a choice of a family movie
or they can continue to watch an instructional soccer video. Only family
movies, without offensive language, graphic violence
or adult situations are played. Back to

What happens during periods of excessive
heat and humidity or adverse weather conditions?
On hot days, we proceed to the classrooms (L-150,
152), depending on the temperature. In the afternoon,
if it is a very hot day, we will use the classrooms
for an extended period of time (until approximately
2:45 or 3:00, depending on the severity of the heat
and humidity). If the gym is available, we will use
it for indoor soccer activities.
Please click here for a description of our
safety and emergency procedures.

| 7) |
How are the players placed into groups?
Campers are placed into groups (of between 12 and 18 players) according
to age and ability. Our goal is to form groups in which players are relatively
compatible (from an ability and competition point of view). Advanced players
may be asked to move up to a higher age group and less experienced players
may be recommended to participate in the next younger age category. Parents
and campers are encouraged to place requests for a change in groups, if
they are not comfortable with the level of competition. Please see the
camp director during any camp day if you should have any questions.

What are the credentials of the coaches
who provide the instruction during the week?
For the backgrounds of the coaches who have coached for the JB Soccer
Academy in the past several years, please click here.
We are proud to have had professional coaches from around the world, including
The United States, Scotland, England, Holland, Jamaica, Bulgaria, Africa,
France, and South America. Coaching assignments:
During the standard weeks, a group of approximately
12 - 18 campers is led by a minimum of two coaches:
a senior coach, and a group coach. The group coach
remains with her/his group the entire week. The senior
coach may rotate to a different group during the week.
A senior coach is a coach who has at least three,
and often considerably more, years of coaching experience
with a club, high school, college team and/or camps.
(S)he is responsible for planning, preparing and executing
the soccer activities according to the daily curriculum.
(S)he is also responsible for setting up and leading
the activities as well as providing accurate feedback
about proper technique and tactics to the camp participants
individually and as a group. A group coach is a coach
with extensive high school and/or college playing
experience. Most group coaches are at least 17 years
of age. (S)he is responsible for general coaching
and demonstrations, verifying registration, general
supervision at the various locations, signing out
players at the end of the day, and completing (upon
request) evaluation forms for the players. Both the
senior as well as the group coaches provide individualized
feedback to the players in their group. For more information
about coaching responsibilities, please see our coaching
manual on the coaches page. Back to

Which week (session) is best for
my daughter/son?
Please refer to our curriculum page (click on: curriculum)
for a detailed description of all soccer activities.
The standard sessions include activities geared towards
improving all aspects of soccer for beginner
through advanced field players: defending, attacking
and midfield play. During the second session,
we provide soccer instruction for elite boys and girls
soccer players. During the fourth session, we will
include two special clinics by a specialty coach with
emphasis on attacking and creating opportunities (shooting,
finishing, heading, volleying, crossing, checking
to the ball and positioning). There is also specialized
goalkeeper training during the last session. If you
are considering signing up for more than one week,
please note that during weeks when the curriculum
is the same, the activities will vary and players
will be exposed to different approaches to the game,
because they will be working with a different group
coach and different senior coaches.
If you would like an approximate breakdown of
the ages and/or gender of the groups for each session,
please email John Bouman at jbsoccer@howardcc.edu
by the end of April/middle of May.

Can I sign my daughter/son up for
a full-day session, even though (s)he is not 7 yet?
The minimum age for players in our youngest full-day
group is 7 years (elite week = 9years) If your daughter
or son is still 6 (or 8for elite players), but you
feel that (s)he is mature enough to experience a full
day of soccer camp (as opposed to a half-day with
the 5 and 6 year olds), you are welcome to sign her/him
up for the full-day session. Just indicate on the
registration form that you have chosen this option
and that you are confident that your child is not
intimidated playing with older campers. Back to the top |
| 11) |
Do you provide team training?
Teams are welcome to enroll. We expect several teams
during the late July weeks, and teams are welcome
to register during any of the other weeks. We will
group the team together, if the players, parents and
coach so desire. The coach is also welcome to attend
and observe any of the sessions at no charge, and
discuss the team's needs with the director and the
coaches, so that we may pay special attention to certain
skills or tactics. Teams receive a discount of $15
per enrollment if 8 or more players register at the
same time.
Team training is also available in the evenings and
is conducted by our experienced local and international
coaches. These coaches often have extensive professional
backgrounds. Please click HERE
for more information. Back to the top |

What is the ratio of girls to boys?
The JB Soccer Academy is a coed camp; we accept registrations
from male and female players. The mix of female and
male players varies each session. Typically more boys
sign up than girls, but we experienced several sessions
in recent years in which we have had 60% and 70% girls.
The average for all past sessions is 30:70 (girls:boys).
If you would like to know the make-up of the session
you are interested in, feel free to email us at jbsoccer@howardcc.edu
or call John Bouman at 410-772-4873. If after you
have registered (assuming you have scheduling flexibility),
you would like to change to a week in which your child
is more compatible with the other campers, you may
do so by emailing John Bouman at the above address. Back

| 13) |
Do you provide scholarships to campers?
We do not have an official scholarship program. However,
please call us if you have financial hardships and
cannot afford the tuition . We would be happy to work
out a payment plan with you. As you may know, the
academy's tuition, compared to the many other local
and national full day camps, is low. In addition,
we pay a significant portion of our tuition revenue
to the college for its educational and athletic programs
and facilities, and to maintain the brand new high
quality fields. With a low player:coach ratio and
significant other outlays, such as full-time trainers,
end-of-week give-aways, DC United tickets and player
appearances, insurance, certifications, special events
and speakers, swimming, transportation, etc., funds
for financial aid are limited. Back to
the top |
| 14) |
Does the JB Soccer Academy provide
transportation?
We do not provide transportation for individual campers
to and from home to the camp. We encourage you
to enroll with teammates and friends and arrange for
carpooling with the families. Back to the top |
| 15) |
Does your trainer administer medication
during camp hours?
No, by a recent change in state law, our trainer
and our coaches are no longer permitted to administer
medicine or apply suntan lotion or insect repellent,
etc., even with a consent form. We ask you to instruct
your child to administer these medications her/himself.
If your child cannot administer her/his own medicine,
we ask you to please visit our camp to do so. Please
call our director at 410.978.4050 if you should
have any questions about this.

| 16) |
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel, we will provide you with a
full refund if you cancel at least one week before
your session starts. If you cancel within one week
of your session, you will receive a 100% refund if
you cancel for a medical or emergency reason.
You will receive a 50% refund for non-emergency reasons.
Please email jbsoccer@howardcc.edu with any refund
requests. Back to the top |

an adult staff member will walk your child over to
the KOC lunch room at noon. A KOC staff member will
then walk your child over to the KOC class at 1:00
